Sara Weller Invited to Prestigious NRHA Derby

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State senior Sara Weller has been chosen by the Varsity Equestrian Selection Committee as one of four riders nationally to compete in the Collegiate Reining Invitational, the organization has announced.

The invitational will be held in conjunction with the National Reining Horse Association Derby in Oklahoma City, Okla., on May 19.

Weller, who was the 2006 IHSA National Champion in Reining, picked up eight wins and four MVP awards this season in head-to-head reining competition and finished the year with an 18-11-3 mark in all Western competition.

The selection committee decided on who it thought was the four best riders in reining in varsity equestrian this year. Selection criteria included individual judges’ picks, number of MVP awards earned this season, season records and average margin of victory.

Weller will join Maddi Williams of Texas A&M, Carrie Von Uhlit of TCU and Katie Bohr of Oklahoma State as the four riders who will compete in reining.

The senior from Garden City helped lead the Wildcat equestrian team to a fourth-place overall finish at the 2007 Varsity Equestrian National Championships, including a sixth-place finish in Western.
