Equestrian Opens Season on the Road

MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas State equestrian team will begin the 2008 fall season on the road as it travels to compete against two of the top programs in the country in South Carolina and Georgia. The Wildcats will go into the weekend competition looking to improve on a 6-6 regular season record from a year ago.

The Wildcats will face some stiff competition to open the 2008-09 season as they look to knock off the 2006 and 2007 National Champion Gamecocks on Friday and the 2008 National Champion Bulldogs on Saturday.

On the English side, K-State’s squad in Equitation over Fences will consist of senior Whitney Snyder, junior Ashley Collett, junior Kendall Marvin, senior Leslie Yates and junior Paige Sullivan. Snyder and Yates each took home two MVP honors last season.

In Equitation on the Flat, Snyder, Yates, senior Jenny Giraldin, senior Katie Mellon, and freshman Stephanie Patterson will compete.

Several exhibition riders will compete as well. In Hunter Seat competition, the Wildcats will feature five riders, including freshman Ellesse Tzinberg, junior Bridget Doyle, senior Dresden Sommer, and senior Paige Kovari.

“The entire team is anxious to get the year started,” said Ashley Foster, Hunter Seat head coach. “Beginning our season against South Carolina followed by a competition against Georgia will be very difficult. However, we have been working hard in order to prepare. We have some new riders who will be competing for the first time, but in addition, we have a number of returners who will bring a lot of experience to the team. We are looking to put in consistent, bold rides.”

On the Western side, K-State will display junior Laura Browne, senior Alyssa Freeman, who took home three MVP awards last season, senior Jana Lechtenberg, junior Courtney Watters, and junior Mikaela Sundgren in Horsemanship.

In reining, K-State’s squad will consist of Freeman, junior Morgan Campbell, a two-time MVP award winner last season, senior Kaylee Stout, junior Dani Pettera, and sophomore Alecia Zimbelman.

K-State will also feature four exhibition riders who will compete in Western competition including senior Caley Coffey, junior Dana Johnson, and sophomore Sierra Fredrick.

“We are really looking forward to kicking off this season on the road,” said Casie Williamson, Western head coach. “All of the girls have been riding great and I am very pleased with how we are practicing. Starting off against USC and Georgia will be extremely tough and will give us a great idea of things we need to work on to have a really strong season. I am expecting the strong, smart performances we need from all of our riders to start us off on the right foot and feel really good about this year.”

Georgia claimed the third national equestrian team title in school history when the Bulldogs took first place in the overall standings at the 2008 Varsity Equestrian National Championships. Georgia downed K-State 11-5 in their last meeting on March 9, 2008 in Manhattan

On the other side, South Carolina won back-to-back national titles in 2006 and 2007. Kansas State looks to have a slight advantage in experience as they return several varsity riders compared to a fairly young South Carolina team.
