Equestrian Rides into Athens for Season Opener

MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas State equestrian team will kick off its 2006-07 schedule this weekend as it battles the Baylor Bears and host Georgia Bulldogs in Athens, Ga., at the Bulldog Invitational. The double-elimination tournament will begin Saturday morning and conclude Sunday.

“We have a lot of new riders this weekend and we would like to see how they compete on a new level and see if they can handle the pressure,” head coach Teresa Slough said. “We would also like to see our veteran riders start the season off well.”

The double-elimination tournament will feature 19 K-State riders in both English and Western styles. Many new riders will make their debut including six freshmen. Ashley Collett and Kendall Marvin will join the English team, while Laura Browne, Morgan Campbell, Dana Johnson and Josie Kaness will make their debuts with the Western Squad.

“This early in the season the competition will be a great opportunity to see how our team is doing and what things we will need to work on for the future,” said Slough.

The action for this weekend is set to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and 7:50 a.m. on Sunday. Results from the weekend’s show will be available online at kstatesports.com as they become available.

Last season, K-State finished sixth in both English and Western at the Varsity National Championships, while taking second in Western and 10th in English at the IHSA National Championships.
