Equestrian Rolls in Season Opener

BROOKINGS, S.D. Behind a stellar MVP performance by Kendall Marvin, the Kansas State equestrian team defeated South Dakota State 11-5 in the first competition of the season Saturday at the Swiftel Center.

Kansas State took an early lead in the English portion of the show with a 6-1-1 win. The Wildcats cruised to the win with victories in both Equitation over Fences, 3-1, and Equitation on the Flat, 3-0-1.

The Wildcats continued their success in the Western portion of the show with a win in Horsemanship, 3-2, and a tie in Reining, 2-2.

"Today was a great start to the season. We had some challenging horses and all of our riders adjusted very well,” English coach Ashley Foster said. “This season we will rely heavily on the five riders who competed today.  It’s great that they all started the season riding so strong. We have some things to go home and work on, but our season is off to an exciting start."

Sophomore Kendall Marvin captured two MVP honors in Equitation over Fences, with a score of 82 and Equitation on the Flat scoring a 75. Sophomore Laura Browne also took home an MVP in Horsemanship with her score of 70.5. The final MVP award was earned by K-State sophomore Morgan Campbell with her score of 70 in Reining.

“I am really proud of how all the girls rode today,” Western coach Casie Williamson said. “We rode some tough horses and everyone produced a very positive ride. All the girls rode very smart and clean, now we just need to go home and clean a few things up. It's a great feeling to pull out all 4 MVP's and we will be in a great place going into the first home competition."

Saturday’s show also featured the debut of two Kansas State riders. Junior Alyssa Freeman picked up a win in Horsemanship with a score of 72.5 and freshman Alecia Zimbelman earned her first win in Reining with a score of 68.5.

Senior Whitney Snyder provided K-State with a spark as she won both of her rides with a win in Equitation over Fences with a score of 78, and Equitation on the Flat, scoring 74.

The Wildcats’ next competition will take place Friday Oct., 12 at Fox Creek Stables for the home opener against Baylor.
