Kansas State Faces Baylor in Big 12 Battle

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The No. 7 Kansas State equestrian team completes a three-meet homestand on Friday when they host No. 6 Baylor at Timbercreek Stables. The meet between the Wildcats and the Bears will be begin at 10 a.m.

K-State is coming off a busy opening weekend, which saw the Hunt seat team tie SMU 5-5, but drop the meet on overall point total (793-732). The Wildcats bounced back in their second meet to defeat UT-Martin, 13-7, in a strong overall performance which saw three Wildcat riders take Most Outstanding Performer honors.

Baylor is coming off a three-meet weekend which saw the team compile three wins and capture the team’s fifth consecutive Willis Invitational.

Head coach Casie Maxwell is excited for the challenge of facing a ranked team and for the opportunity for her team to take a big step forward.

“This is a big weekend for our team as we open conference play against a tough Baylor team,” Maxwell said. “Our riders have been practicing well and we worked out some kinks last weekend in our first competition, so I feel well prepared going into Friday.”

K-State saw impressive performances from many of their riders, including the four captains. Junior Rachel Webster earned two wins against SMU and swept MOP honors for her rides on Equitation Over Fences and Equitation on the Flat. Webster also picked up a win against UT-Martin in Equitation Over Fences.

Meredith Finch started her senior campaign strong by picking up wins in her discipline of Equitation on the Flat against both SMU and UT-Martin.

In their first action of the season, senior Sam Etsell and junior Kelly Bovaird earned their first win of the season, after earning high scores in the disciplines of Reining and Horsemanship, respectively. The two captains also took home MOP honors.

Seniors Kali Yates and Larissa Laffey also backed up the Wildcats performance, with the senior duo picking up two wins each.

Admission is free and open to the public. K-StateHD.TV will film K-State Gameday hosted by Brian Smoller and former Wildcat letterwinner Melanie Hinzpeter at Friday’s match. The show will offer a profile of the 2012-13 squad and also features on riders Etsell and Webster. The show will be available for fans to view at 3 p.m., at www.kstatesports.com/allaccess.
