No. 2 Wildcats to Take on No. 8 Cowgirls

MANHATTAN, Kan. - With over a month's work of preparation and fine-tuning in the books, the No. 2 Kansas State equestrian team is back at Timbercreek Stables on Saturday at 10 a.m., to host No. 8 Oklahoma State. Admission to the meet is free and open to the public.

The Kansas State equestrian team comes into the meet with high spirits and confidence, as they have been unstoppable so far this season. K-State has also made sure that their talents have not been overlooked, ascending to a No. 2 ranking in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) for the past three weeks, which is the highest ranking in the program's history.

"We are looking forward to getting back in the competition arena this Saturday. We had great success early this semester and have worked hard in October both mentally and physically to prepare us for the tough schedule this month," said Head Coach Casie Maxwell.

Last season in the head to head match up in Manhattan between the Wildcats and Cowgirls, K-State clinched the victory with an 11-9 win, but fell short to OSU in Stillwater and in the Big 12 Championship at the end of the 2013-14 season.

The Hunt Seat team will be led by senior captain Madison Wayda and sophomore Henley Adkins. Adkins' outstanding performance this season has helped lead the Wildcats to a 4-0 start. Adkins, who will compete in both disciplines this weekend, is now 5-3 this season and 21-19-1 in her career as a Wildcat. Wayda will try and earn her 13th career Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) Award this Saturday.

Sophomores Taylor Schmidt will join Adkins in both disciplines, Equitation over Fences and Equitation on the Flat. Freshman Halle Kutsche who rode for the first time as a Wildcat against Alabama and received her first career MOP will rides in Equitation over Fences in hopes to bring home another point and honors for the Wildcats along with sophomore Alexis Graves. Sophomores Gretchen Koenen and Christina Martinelli will continue their strong streak as they will partake in Equitation on the Flat.

Senior captain Savannah Smith and junior captain Danielle Kemper led a diverse Western team to an undefeated season so far by outscoring their opponents 18-8 in both disciplines.

Along with Kemper's undefeated season (3-0) and earning her first career MOP, the Wildcats will have lone senior Kelsey Sousa available as well as sophomore Alyssa Lombardi and Sydney Anson. Freshman Kristen Chamberland will strive to pick up her first collegiate victory on Saturday against the Cowgirls.

In Reining, K-State will look to Smith to lead the squad. Smith will try and pick her up third victory of the season and her 20th win of her career. Junior Kara Guy and Nicholle Hatton will look to contribute positive results to the lineup this week. Freshmen Brynn Critcher and Heidi Schmitz will look to pick up their second personal scoring rides for the second time of their career.
