IRVING, Texas – Kansas State equestrian rider Kelly Bovaird was one of five athletes named October Rider of the Month, in an announcement by the Big 12 on Wednesday. Bovaird earned the accolade in Horsemanship.

“Kelly has had an outstanding collegiate career and I am so glad to see her senior year starting out on such a successful note,” said head coach Casie Maxwell. “She works extremely hard and deserves to be rewarded for her efforts. I look forward to helping her have her most successful season yet this year.”

During the month of October, Bovaird went a perfect 3-0 in Horsemanship, with one Most Outstanding Player (MOP) honor. Her first win of the month came against Logan Pluhar of Texas A&M. Bovaird won the matchup, 75-72.5. The senior from Tulsa, Okla., also came away with the MOP in the discipline with the win. Against Baylor on Oct. 18, she bested Gillian Chant, 72.5-69. The following day, Bovaird knocked off Katie Gray of TCU, 74-72.5.

“I am so excited to be the October Big 12 Rider of the Month,” said Bovaird. “It was such a great surprise and I am so honored to have been chosen for it. This would not have been possible without my amazing coaches and outstanding teammates.”

Earlier this season, Bovaird was one of eight riders selected to compete in the 2013 American Quarter Horse Association Horsemanship (AQHA) Challenge. The AQHA Horsemanship Challenge will take place Nov. 20-21.

Baylor’s Alicia Gasser (Equitation Over Fences), Sam Schaefer (Equitation on the Flat) and TCU’s Caitlin Ader (Equitation on the Flat) and Chantz Stewart (Reining) were also named to the Rider of the Month list.

No. 6 K-State travels to Martin, Tenn., for a showdown with No. 10 SMU and UT-Martin on Saturday. The Wildcats return to Timbercreek Stables action on Nov. 22, for the fall season finale against No. 1 Georgia.
