Equestrian Comes Up Short Against No. 5 OSU

MANHATTAN, Kan. Whitney Snyder brought home two wins, and three Wildcat riders earned MVP honors on Friday, but the Kansas State equestrian team lost its final home show of the fall semester, 13-7, to No. 5 Oklahoma State, at Fox Creek Farm.

Senior Katie Mellon won MVP honors in Equitation over Fences, junior Laura Browne in Horsemanship, and sophomore Alecia Zimbelman in Reining.

Although the scores may not show it, both Wildcat squads had solid performances against Oklahoma State. The Western squad lost to the Cowgirls, 7-3, while the Hunter Seat squad lost 6-4.

On the Western side, Browne was the lone winner in Horsemanship after defeating Margaux Tucker, 75-71. Zimbelman and junior Morgan Campbell both picked up wins for K-State in Reining. Zimbelman defeated Jacque Roberts, 68-57, while Campbell put down Rachell Shobe, 69.5-67.5.

“I was really proud of our MVP riders today,” said Casie Williamson, Western head coach. “Alecia Zimbelman really showed off everything we have been working on in practice and it paid off. Laura Browne was able to get a strong connection with her horse and executed great showmanship the entire ride. Both of those girls hard work really paid off in the show pen today. As for the rest of the riders, today just wasn't our day. We keep getting better and better in the practice pen, but we haven't been able to take into the competition arena. We will continue to work hard over the break and hope we can strengthen our record in the spring.”

In Equitation over Fences, three Wildcat riders picked up wins. Mellon defeated Jaclyn Osterstock in a close battle, 74-72, while Snyder picked up another win on the season by defeating Erin Prutow, 78-73, and junior Ashley Collett defeated Devon Smithburg, 77-71, to pick up her third win of the fall semester.

In Equitation on the Flat, Snyder brought home her second win of the day by knocking off Jen McLaughlin, 68.5-63.5. She was lone winner on the flat for K-State.

Several riders showed for the Wildcats in Exhibition competition, but only two riders brought home wins. Junior Bridget Doyle defeated Erin Arnold by a large margin, 78-42, over fences, and junior Josie Kness picked up a win by defeating Lauren Huffaker, 73-66.5.

Kansas State’s next competition will be on January 31, 2009 against New Mexico State in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
