K-State Eighth, Sunner Ties for Seventh

FLORENCE, Ariz. – Kansas State’s women’s golf team collected a 306 (+18) to finish eighth out of 19 teams in the final round of the Northern Migration Invitational Wednesday.

K-State tallied a three-round score of 921 (+57) for the event at Poston Butte Golf Course. The Wildcats topped Big 12 foes Texas Tech and Kansas. The Red Raiders finished with a 54-hole score of 922 (+58) and the Jayhawks wrapped up with a 929 (+65).

K-State senior Abbi Sunner finished in a tie for seventh among individuals after recording a final-round 2-over par 74.

Sunner’s top-10 finish is the sixth of her career and her 11th top-20 finish. The senior’s 54-hole score of 223 (+7) is the lowest of the season for Sunner. The Ankeny, Iowa, native finished tied for second among Big 12 competitors.

“I felt very comfortable this week with my game,” said Sunner. “My swing and putting stroke felt great. Other than a few mishaps, I was very pleased.”

The University of Texas-San Antonio carded a 13-over par 301 in the final round to take first-place in the team competition. The Roadrunners edged the Vandals of Idaho, who shot a 32-over par 896 through three rounds, by one stroke.

Idaho’s Kayla Mortello never surrendered the top spot among the individual scores as she finished with a 5-under par 211. Mortello bested Summer Batiste of UTSA, who tallied a 54-hole score of 2-under par 214.

Ami Storey scored a career-best 1-over 73 in the final round. The sophomore moved up 14 spots to finish in a tie for 21st. Storey turned in a 54-hole score of 12-over par, 228.

Tying for 41st was Hanna Roos, who carded a final round 79 (+7). The freshman recorded a 54-hole score of 234 (+18).

Elise Houtz shot a 9-over par 81 in the third and final round. Houtz tallied a three-round score of 21-over par 237 to finish in a tie for 58th.

Morgan Moon compiled a three-round score of 243 (+27) after scoring an 8-over par 80 in the final round. The senior finished in a tie for 80th.

Junior Emily Houtz, who competed as an individual, carded a final-round score of 85 (+13), putting her in a tie for 73rd with a three-round score of 241 (+25).

K-State will continue action, Friday, March 26th, at the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz., at Mountain View Golf Course.
