K-State Finishes Second at Canes/Cards

MIAMI LAKES, Fla. - Morgan Moon shot a 4-over par 76 and finished in a tie for sixth helping the Kansas State women's golf team finish second out of 10 teams during the final round of the Canes/Cards Classic Tuesday at Don Shula Golf Course.

K-State shot a 307 (+19) in the third round to finish with a 54-hole score of 921 (+57). The Wildcats edged third-place Akron, which shot a three-round total of 922 (+58), by one stroke. Maryland topped all teams with a 299 (+11) in the final round, giving the Terpes a 54-hole score of 908 (+44).

The Wildcats recorded the most birdies of the 10 teams with 30 and placed four golfers in the top-20.

The second-place finish was the highest for the Wildcats since they took second at the Bronco Fall Invitational in the fall of 2007.

"It was a very good effort by the ladies this week," said coach Kristi Knight. "Abbi (Sunner) had a great round and Morgan (Moon) and Elise (Houtz) fought for every shot."

The sixth-place tie was best finish for Moon in her career at K-State. The senior carded a 54-hole score of 11-over par 227. Moon collected seven birdies throughout three rounds to propel her to the fifth top-20 finish of her career and second of the spring.

Abbi Sunner tallied the best final-round by a Wildcat with a 1-over par 73. She finished the event with a three-round total of 229 (+13) to tie for 11th, the 12th top-20 finish of her career.

Hanna Roos had a couple tough holes in the third round to score a 9-over par 81. The freshman's first two rounds of 76 and 74 kept her total low enough to finish in a tie for 12th and take home her third top-20 finish of the season.

Also finishing in the top-20 was Elise Houtz, who finished in 20th. The Manhattan, Kan., native scored a three-round total of 234 (+18). She has now collected four top-20 finishes in her career.

Kristen Dorsey carded a 9-over par 81, her lowest score of the event. Dorsey's 54-hole score of 252 (+36) placed her in a tie for 46th.

K-State will continue action at the Baylor Spring Invitational, April 12-13, in Waco, Texas, at Twin Rivers Golf Course.
