Wildcats Start Season in Second at Sunflower Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Kansas State women's golf team sits in second place after two rounds of the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational at the par-72, 6,158-yard Alvamar Golf Club on Monday. Led by freshman Chandler Gallagher in her collegiate debut, the Wildcats finished the day six shots back of the lead.

"We are a little disappointed to be six back, but have a lot of positives to draw on from today." K-State assistant coach Stewart Burke said.

Gallagher fired a tournament-low 69 in the second round to sit alone atop the leaderboard, guiding the Wildcats to a team score of 20-over par 596.

Kansas leads the team competition with a score of 14-over par 590. The Jayhawks were paced by Yupaporn Kawinpakorn, who is one stroke behind Gallagher at 1-under par 143.

Wildcat freshman Connie Jaffrey and sophomore Madison Talley join Gallagher inside the top-15 heading into Tuesday's final round. Jaffrey carded a 3-over par 147 on Monday, while Talley followed with a 6-over par 150.

"For both of our freshmen to play so well was really reassuring for tomorrow," Burke said. "Chandler's 69 was a great score in testing conditions."

The conclusion of the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational will begin at 8:30 a.m. (CT). Final results will be posted on www.kstatesports.com following the conclusion of the event.
