MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State women's golf team, led by a strong showing from Gianna Misenhelter, finished second at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational at the par 72, 6,181-yard Colbert Hills Golf Course on Tuesday.

The Wildcats tallied a 41-over par 905 and finished 14 strokes behind team champion Arkansas-Little Rock, which ended with a 27-over par 891. This was K-State's first top-3 finish since last season's Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational in Lawrence, Kan.

"We had a little bit of a struggle on a couple of holes, but there was some good golf played," head coach Kristi Knight said. "Overall, I am proud of their effort because they competed really hard. It was a good competitive tournament, but we held our position in second."

Misenhelter was three shots back of the leader entering the final round and was tied with UALR's Malin Lundberg going into the final hole. Lundberg was able to edge Misenhelter by one stroke with a tournament winning 1-over par 217.

Misenhleter's second-place finish was the best of her career, topping a tie for 12th last year at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational and Johnie Imes Invitational.

"Gianna just played super," Knight said. "I know she is disappointed coming up a stroke short, but she has a lot to be proud of. Gianna had a good summer and a lot of great experiences, and I know she will use this as a motivator and will move forward. She never gives in and fought until the very end."

Misenhelter was one of four Wildcats to earn top-20 finishes. Paige Osterloo tied for seventh with a 7-over par 223. Whitney Pyle and Ami Storey both finished in a tie for 15th, carding a 14-over par 230.

Kristen Dorsey pulled together a solid performance, finishing 22nd and notching a 16-over par 232.

Laura Hildebrant finished the third round strong at 5-over par 77, which gave her a 54-hole score of 18-over par 324.

Carly Ragains ended her first collegiate tournament in a tie for 33rd at 19-over par 235.

Hannah Roos finished 41st with a 23-over par 239, and Olivia Eliasson carded a 33-over par 249.

K-State is back in action Oct. 3-4, when the Wildcats travel to Columbia, Mo., for the Johnie Imes Invitational at the Club at Old Hawthorne.
