Roos Leads Wildcats to Third Place

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Hanna Roos shot a final-round score of 75 to propel Kansas State’s women’s golf team to a third-place finish Tuesday at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, its only home competition of the year.

Tulsa finished on top of the leader board, narrowly defeating the Razorbacks of Arkansas by three strokes. Tulsa shot a final round 290 (+2) to better its score by 12 strokes from round two, while Arkansas lowered its score by 14 strokes with a final-round total of 291 (+3).

Arkansas’ Kelli Shean never relinquished her top spot in the final round as she shot 5-under par Tuesday to seal the victory over second-place Kristina Markle of Tulsa. Markle shot a 70 (-2) in the final round, following up on her course-record 66 (-6) in round two.

Going into the final round K-State trailed third-place Illinois State by four strokes. Roos and Abbi Sunner were able to birdie the par-5, 16th hole to bring the Wildcats to within one stroke of the Redbirds. Roos birdied again, along with fellow freshman Whitney Pyle on the par-4 4th, to move past Illinois State by a stroke. The third-place finish is the best finish in the same tournament since 2005, when the Cats finished third as well.

A native of Sweden, Roos continued to be impressive in her first collegiate competition. She totaled three birdies in the final round to give her a score of 3-over par and a three-round total of 231 (+15). Roos’ performance earned her a tie for seventh place, giving K-State its first top-10 finish this year.

Sunner, a senior from Ankeny, Iowa, showed her veteran form and carded a 75 (+3) for her best 18-hole score of the young season. Sunner’s three-round score of 239 (+23) placed her in a tie for 27th.

Senior Morgan Moon continued to keep pace for the Wildcats, shooting a final round 78 (+6) and finished tied for 20th. She started off the day with a double-bogey on the first hole and was unable to completely recover, posting just one birdie in the round. She finished with final score of 237 for three rounds.

Pyle continued to better her score with each round throughout the competition, shooting 85, 79 and 78 in the three rounds. She finished in a tie for 33rd in her first collegiate tourney with a three-round score of 242 (+26).

K-State’s White Team finished seventh after a final round score of 304, bettering round two by 15 strokes. Its three-round total was 960 (+96) which nearly caught Big 12-foe Kansas , which scored a 954.

Leading the White Team was Paige Osterloo, who shot a final round 75 (+3). The sophomore’s three-round total was 233 (+17), placing her 13th out of 70 competitors.

Following close behind Osterloo was junior Elise Houtz, who shot the best round for the Wildcats on the day with a final round 72 (E) to put her in a tie for 14th. Houtz made two birdies and an eagle on the back nine and finished with a three-round score of 234 (+18).
