TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Freshman Katherine Gravel-Coursol notched a 2-over par 74 on Friday to lead the Kansas State women's golf team during the first round of the Florida State Matchup at the par 72, 7,172-yard Southwood Golf Club.

The Wildcats currently sit in 11th place at a 27-over par - 22 strokes behind South Carolina and Texas A&M, which finished at 5-over par 293. In the paired competition, Kansas State and Mississippi State are currently in sixth place -- 33 strokes behind host Florida State and No. 39 Texas A&M.

Gravel-Coursol birdied four holes, including two of the last three, to move into a tie for 12th overall. Florida State's Matilda Castren leads the individual competition at 4-under par 68.

"Katherine played great," head coach Kristi Knight said. "She has practiced very well and worked diligently on her alignment and chipping over the past 10 days."

Junior Carly Ragains birdied two holes but was unable to overcome a rough start as she carded a 7-over par 79 to finish the day tied for 44th. One stroke behind her was freshman Scotland Preston, who also carded two birdies en route to an 8-over par 80.

Rounding out scoring for the Wildcats was senior Gianna Misenhelter, who rebounded nicely on the back nine, highlighted by a birdie on the par-4 288-yard seventh hole, to finish at a 10-over par 82. One shot behind her was Olivia Eliasson.

"Our play was poor today, but I believe we can be sharper tomorrow," Knight said. "We have two rounds left--we need to compete with attitude and heart!"

The Wildcats begin second-round play on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. (EST). Live stats of the Florida State Matchup can be followed at and recaps of the tournament will be posted on at the conclusion of play on Saturday and Sunday.
