MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Big 12 Conference announced 60 student-athletes have received the second annual Dr. Gerald Lage Award on Tuesday, and four Kansas State Wildcats were among the group. Two members of K-State’s track and field team, one rower and one women’s golfer all received the prestigious academic award.

Seniors Chelsie Bonds and Ryann Krais from the women’s track and field team received the honor. Bonds holds a 3.89 GPA while double majoring in history and Spanish. Krais is majoring in psychology with a 3.95 GPA. Bonds has been a strong contributor throughout her career at K-State scoring at Big 12 Championship meets on a consistent basis. Krais is competing this weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championship and won her first NCAA title outdoors last year in the heptathlon.

From the rowing team, senior Amanda Weishaar is majoring in public relations and has a cumulative GPA of 3.90. Weishaar is a team captain and has played a role with the Student-Athlete Advisory Council this year as the communications chair. Hildebrandt has competed in two tournaments this season for the Wildcats with a scoring average of 78.00 in six rounds. She recently was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the fall semester and was one of 36 Wildcats to post a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester.

The Dr. Gerald Lage Award is given to student-athletes who have lettered at least once in their respective sport while maintaining residence at their institution for at least one academic year. The honoree, which can only be recognized once, must have completed at least 100 earned credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 3.80 or higher at the time of nomination.

The award is named in memory of Dr. Lage, who served as the Oklahoma State faculty athletics representative with the NCAA and the Big Eight/Big 12 Conference from 1983 until his death in 2007. Lage had been a member of the Oklahoma State family since 1966 when he joined the College of Business Administration as an assistant professor. He went on to serve the university in a number of different positions within the business and economics departments.
