Wildcats Finish in 10th Place at Duramed Collegiate

Rio Verde, Ariz. The Kansas State women’s golf team held on to its 10th place spot in the final day of the Duramed Collegiate Invitational at Quail Run Golf Course. The Wildcats carded a 311-307-309927 (+75) to tie with Illinois State and had one top 20 finisher.

“The ladies did their best this week; they made some mistakes and they know they can improve on this,” head coach Kristi Knight said. “Emily battled hard all week and had better ball striking today and was able to make good decisions. Abbi hung in there and salvaged her round today. She did not have good ball striking today, but she battled through it.”

Kansas was able to run away with the tournament in the final round, carding a 294-295-294883 (+31) to beat second place Arkansas-Little Rock by 24 strokes. Eastern Michigan jumped from sixth place to third in the last round and finished the tournament with a 62-over score of 914.

Meghan Gockel of Kansas and Sara Wikstrom of Arkansas-Little Rock finished in a tie for first place, both carding 5-over scores of 218 for the tournament. Boram Lee of Toledo and Kelsey Verbeten of Wisconsin finished tied for third place, both finishing at 7-over par.

Junior Abbi Sunner was able to crack the top 20 for the second time this season and finished in a tie for 18th place. Sunner shot a 75-75-77227 (+14) for the tournament. Freshman Ami Storey, who finished just one stroke back from Sunnner, had a breakthrough 15-over performance and just missed the top 20, finishing in a tie for 22nd.

Sophomore Emily Houtz was able to put together a 5-over performance in round three, to climb into a tie at 43rd.

“Ami and Emily had their best college results and Ami played pretty steady all weak,” Knight said. “This (performance) should be a good spring board for her.”

Morgan Moon finished the tournament at 25-over par and Elise Houtz finished at 30-over par.

The Wildcats will resume action March 16-18 in the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course in Honolulu, Hawaii.
