K-State Completes One Round in Austin

AUSTIN, Texas After 18 holes of play at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, the Kansas State women’s team sits in a three-way tie for 15th on the University of Texas Golf Club course in Austin, Texas. The field, packed with 13 of the nation’s top 50 programs, finished with each team shooting over-par on the day, while the Wildcats combined for a first-round score of 329, 14-over par.

 

Senior Kali Quick paced the team with a 7-over 79 and finished with a 1-over score on the front nine after firing two birdies. The product of Nampa, Idaho, is currently tied with a pack of eight additional individuals for 24th place on the player leaderboard.

 

The remaining Wildcat seniors sit just a few shots shy of Quick, with Hailey Mireles carding a 10-over 82 and Michelle Regan bringing in an 11-over 83. Mireles, out of Garden City, Kan., is tied for 52nd, while Regan, the Prairie Village, Kan., native, is tied for 59th.

 

K-State’s underclassmen Abbi Sunner and Elise Houtz finished the day with an 85 (+13) and 87 (+15), respectively. Sophomore Sunner sits in a tie for 75th and freshman Houtz is tied for 80th.

 

Each of the 90 individual competitors was unable to fire under par on the course which led to Florida’s Ornella Jouven’s first-day lead after she finished at even-par 72. Alexandra Phelps of New Mexico is one shot back, while Texas’ Julia Best and Arkansas’ Stacy Lewis, the current No. 1 rated golfer, are tied for third with a 2-over 74.

 

Taking a slim lead in the team standings was New Mexico, as the Lobos brought in a 15-over 303 through 18 holes. They hold a two-shot lead over No. 5 Florida, while host Texas sits in third with a 20-over 308.

 

The second round of action from the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational will begin at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, as Houtz will be the first Wildcat to tee off. A recap of action following the second round will be available at www.kstatesports.com, while live stats can be followed at www.golfstat.com.
