Cats Finish First Two Rounds at Mountain View

TUCSON, Ariz. The Kansas State women’s golf team showed a seven-stroke improvement in its first two rounds at the Mountain View Intercollegiate, firing a 306-299605 (+29) on Saturday. The Wildcats sit in a two-way tie for 12th with 18 holes to play on the par 72, 6,178-yard Mountain View Golf Course. The two-round total marks K-State’s best opening 36 holes of a tournament this spring.

Only Iowa State dropped more team strokes between rounds (nine) than both K-State and Michigan (seven). Only three teams in the field, Indiana, Nebraska and East Carolina, were able to post two rounds both under 300.

Oklahoma and Indiana are currently tied for first with 13-over par 589s. San Jose State’s Erica Moston is the tournament’s individual leader at 4-under par 140, holding a three-stroke advantage over a pair of Indiana Hoosiers in Lauren Harling and Laura Nochta.

The Wildcats are just two strokes from the top 10 and 10 strokes out of the top five heading into Sunday’s final round play.

“Most of the girls agreed that they left a lot of shots out there on the golf course,” head coach Kristi Knight said. “The afternoon round was better, and we made a few more putts. Our goal is to be better again in the third round.”

Michelle Regan is leading the way for the Wildcats. The senior posted a score of 75-74149 (+5) to hold a spot in the top 20 and will be looking for her fifth top-20 of the season.

Kali Quick and Hailey Mireles are both tied for 43rd after carding 8-over par 152s.

Morgan Moon, playing as an individual in the Mountain View Intercollegiate, dropped 10 strokes from her first to second round. The sophomore shot 83-73156 (+12), giving her season-lows in both 18-hole and 36-hole scores.

Third-round action begins Sunday at 9 a.m. (CDT). Results will be posted on www.k-statesports.com following the conclusion of the tournament.
