Wildcats Hit Waco to Take on Big 12

BIG 12 CONFERENCE HISTORY:   The Wildcats finished last year’s Big 12 tournament in ninth place after shooting a 312-297-329938. The Wildcats highest finish in the Big 12 tournament was sixth place, which they have done twice(2002 & 2003). Last year Katy Heffel led the Wildcats with a 19th place finish after carding a 76-73-84233 (+17). Heffel also led the Wildcat team at the 2005 Big 12 Championship with a 78-76-80234 (+18) to finish tied for 22nd. Senior teammate Helen Robert was the only current Wildcat to play at the 2004 tournament, she carded a 77-79156 to tie for 30th (third round was cancelled).

 

ONE LAST PUSH FOR REGIONALS: The Wildcats head into the final tournament of the regualr season ranked 22nd in the central region according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Women's District Rankings. Last year the central regional tournament had 21 teams in it, which would leave the Wildcats just off the board. The Wildcats have been playing their best golf of the year the last two tournaments though averaging team rounds of 296 over the last six rounds. The Wildcats shot an 884 and an 892 in their last two tournaments, their best team scores of the season.

  

THE FIELD:  The Wildcats will compete against their fellow Big 12 schools, all of which the Wildcats have faced at least once already this season. The rankings of the teams according to the GolfStat national head-to-head rankings are as follows: Oklahoma State (11), Texas A&M (14), Baylor (36), Missouri (43), Nebraska (52), Oklahoma (62), Colorado (63), Kansas State (73), Kansas (74), Texas (78), Texas Tech (79), and Iowa State (87).

 

THE COURSE:  The Ridgewood Country Club, which opened in 1947, overlooks scenic Lake Waco. The course, located just 12 miles from Baylor’s campus, has hosted several intercollegiate tournaments including the women’s 2000 Big 12 Fall Preview and the men’s 1994 Southwest Conference Championship.

 

THE FORMAT:  The teams will shoot 54 holes, 18 holes each on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Split tees will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday, and 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

 

LAST TIME OUT: The Wildcats finished 8th out of 18 teams at the Susie Maxwell Classic in Norman, Okla. Junior Michelle Regan claimed her 11th career top-20 finish with a score of 73-71-72216 (E), tying her for seventh place. Freshman Abbi Sunner carded a 74-73-76223 (+7) to tie for 22nd place. Senior Helene Robert shot a 74-75-78227 (+11), tying her for 46th place. Senior Katy Heffel scored a 76-72-81229 (+13), tying her for 52nd place with junior teammate Hailey Mireles who shot a 74-75-80229 (+13). Freshman Morgan Moon in just her fourth appearance of the year for the Wildcats carded a 79-78-84241 (+25) to tie for 89th.
