Moon, Houtz In Top-10 At Big 12

 

NORMAN, Okla. - K-State's Morgan Moon and Emily Houtz shot their way into the top-10 and helped the Wildcats to a sixth-place position after the first round Friday of the Big 12 Championships at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.

Moon controlled the leaderboard with four holes remaining but double-bogeyed 18 to record a 1-over par 73, putting her in sixth place. Moon tallied three birdies during the first round.

Houtz scored 1-over par on each nine to finish with a 2-over 74 in the opening round, putting her in a tie for seventh. She finished the day ranked second in birdies recorded with four.

"Emily and Morgan played very well today," said coach Kristi Knight. "We had a solid start and played very well on the front nine. We lost a few shots on the back nine but I am proud of the ladies."

K-State scored a 15-over par 303 in the opening round to edge seventh-place Texas A&M and Nebraska by two strokes, which each recorded a 305 (+17).

Oklahoma State's Victoria Park and Caroline Hedwall shared the top spot on the leaderboard after each carded a 2-under par 70. Rosalyn Kim of Texas Tech was in second-place with a round of 1-under par 71.

Oklahoma State led the team competition with a 5-over par 293 in the first round. Texas Tech shot 11-over par 299 to finish the day in second place.

Hanna Roos aided K-State's first round with a 5-over par 77, putting her in a tie for 28th place. Senior Abbi Sunner shot a 7-over par 79, good for a tie for 43rd. Rounding out K-State's lineup was Ami Storey, who completed the first round in a tie for 46th after carding an 8-over par 80.

K-State's will tee-off in the second round at 8 a.m., Saturday. Live stats can be followed at www.golfstat.com.
