Moon Pacing Wildcats after Round One

LUBBOCK, Texas - K-State's Morgan Moon has come to the Big 12 Championships to compete for the top spot as she currently sits in a tie for second place after round one.

Moon has led the Wildcat squad, which has two players in the top-20, to third place after the first day after the 'Cats carded a team score of 311 (+19) on Friday at the Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas.

"It was very windy for the most of the day, but it was a playable wind because it was from the south," head coach Kristi Knight said. "The girls know how many shots they left on the front nine. I think they had a good practice after the round and they are excited about tomorrow."

Oklahoma State currently sits atop the leaderboard after carding a 3-over, 295 in first round action. Texas A&M is nine strokes behind the Cowgirls, carding a 12-over score of 304. The race for third place has heated up with K-State holding on by just one stroke ahead of fourth-place Kansas at the end of the first round.

Caroline Hedwall of Oklahoma State leads all players after carding seven birdies in the opening round for a 3-under score of 70. K-State's Morgan Moon and Texas A&M's Ashley Freeman are currently tied for second place, both two shots back from the leader. Moon started out shooting a 1-under on the back nine and finished even on the front nine, including an eagle on hole No. 2, to finish with a 72 (-1) on day one.

“Morgan played really solid all day; I’m really proud of her,” Knight said. “She was struggling earlier in the semester, but has worked hard and has her game where it needs to be at the right time of the year.”

Freshman Ami Storey is in second place among K-State golfers, carding a 5-over, 78 and tied for 17th place. Elise Houtz is currently tied for 28th place after finishing the first round just two strokes back from Storey, thanks in part to her two birdies on the front nine.

“Abbi, Emily and Paige were all frustrated in the way they played on the back nine,” Knight said. “They know what they are capable of and they felt like they left some shots out there today.”

Other K-State competitors include Abbi Sunner, who is tied for 36th place and Paige Osterloo, who sits in a tie for 39th.

The Wildcats will begin second round action tomorrow morning beginning at 8:00 a.m. Live stats are available at and round two results will be posted as soon as they become available.
