K-State, Moon Make Strong Push at Big 12

NORMAN, Okla. -- Using a spring-best 9-over par 297 performance on Saturday, the Kansas State women's golf team shot up the leaderboard into a tie for third place following second-round action of the 2010 Big 12 Championship at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.

The Wildcats head into Sunday's final round tied with No. 25 Texas A&M with a score of 600 (+24), just one shot behind second-place and 29th-ranked Texas (+23). Oklahoma State leads the competition with a two-round total of 13-over par 589. K-State has put itself in position to best its fourth-place finish at last season's Big 12 Championships, the team's highest placing at the conference tournament.

Individually, Morgan Moon moved up three places to third place after firing a 1-over par 73 on Saturday. She scored 1-under par on the front nine, recording eight pars and one birdie, and finished with a career-best 36-hole score of 2-over par 146.

Moon trails first-place Caroline Hedwall of Oklahoma State, who has scored a 36-hole score of 7-under par 137, and second-place Victoria Park, also of Oklahoma State, who has recorded a 3-under par 141.

"The girls did a great job today," said head coach Kristi Knight. "The wind was up all day but Morgan and Abbi (Sunner) were solid and played through it. Emily (Houtz) played awesome to battle back from a tough start to finish 4-over par."

Sunner and Houtz also posted impressive numbers for the Wildcats in the second round and each sit in the top-15.

Sunner recorded three birdies and three bogeys for an even-par 72 and has a share of 14th-place after starting the day in a tie for 43rd. She has a two-round total of 151 (+7).

Houtz holds onto 12th place with Missouri's Julia Potter after recording a second round score of 4-over par 76. Houtz was 4-over par through the front nine but shot even par on the back nine to tally a career-best 36-hole score of 6-over par 150.

Hanna Roos improved her game in round two by one stroke from the first round, recording a 4-over par 76, to move into a tie for 24th. Roos owns a two-round score of 9-over par 153.
