Regan 4th, Cats 9th After One Round At Big 12s

STILLWATER, Okla. Senior Michelle Regan sits in a tie for fourth place after 18 holes of the Big 12 Championship, and the Kansas State women’s golf team is just five shots out of sixth place with two more days to go. The Wildcats shot a 335 (+47) on the windy par 72, 6,210-yard Karsten Creek Golf Course and are currently tied for ninth heading into Saturday’s round.

“The mindset is to go out and be a little better tomorrow than we were today,” Knight said. “This is a tough golf course, and the winds are going to stay up and the greens aren’t going to get slower. So it’s a matter of being patient and putting yourself in a position where you can roll the ball aggressively. It’s one day at a time and one hole at a time.”

Host school Oklahoma State has had its way so far on its home course. The Cowgirls are on top of the leaderboard after carding a 15-over par 303 in Friday’s round. Oklahoma State currently has the top three individuals in the Championship, including first-place Jaclyn Sweeney with a 2-over par 74.

Regan fought the fast greens and high winds to shoot an opening-round 77 (+5). The Prairie Village, Kan., native was just 1-over par on the front nine holes and totaled four birdies in her round.

“Michelle (Regan) put together a really nice round,” Knight said. “She did a lot of things good today. I’m so happy with that.”

Another senior leading the Wildcats was Hailey Mireles. Mireles is just five strokes back of Regan at 10-over 82 and is currently tied for 23rd.

Elise Houtz is playing in her first Big 12 Championship and came in tied for 33rd with a 12-over 84. Houtz was 11-over par on her front nine but righted the ship with eight pars on the backside.

“For her first Big 12 Championship, Elise (Houtz) got off to a rocky start,” Knight said. “But she came back and was 1-over on the back nine. That’s a great job by her. She’s ready for tomorrow.”

Action resumes Saturday with 18 holes before Sunday’s final round. Live scoring can be found at and a round two recap and results will be posted on
