Wildcats set tee off 2006-07 season

LET'S GET IT STARTED:  After missing regional play the last two seasons, the Kansas State women's golf team will be out to get things back on track in 2006-07, beginning Sunday and Monday, when the Wildcats travel to Madison, Wis., for the Badger Invitational.

THE FIELD:  Kansas State will get an early look at three of its Big 12 Conference rivals as the Wildcats will do battle with league foes Oklahoma, Nebraska and Iowa State. In addition to host Wisconsin, the Big Ten will be represented by Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Georgetown, Louisville, Memphis and Illinois State round out the 11-team field. Nebraska, at No. 39 in this week's Golfweek/Sagarin national rankings, is the only team currently ranked in the top 50.

THE FORMAT:  The tournament will tee off on Sunday with 36 holes and will get underway with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Pairings for Monday's third and finial round will be determined by score with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The low four individual scores will determine the team score for each round.

THE HOST:   University Ridge Golf Course:  Home course of the Wisconsin Badgers, University Ridge is located in Madison, Wis. The par 72, 6,175-yard course has hosted notable tournaments on its greens before, including the 1998 NCAA Div. I Women's Golf Championship and the 2000 Big Ten Women's Golf Championship. The Big Ten Men's Golf Championships were held at University Ridge as well in 1995 and 2005.

BACK TO THE BADGER: Kansas State will be making its second straight apperance at the Badger Invitational. Last year the Wildcats carded a team score of 932, tying for ninth.  Helene Robert led the team, shooting 232 for the tournament.  All five Wildcats that competed last year will be going back, looking to improve on last years finish.

THE LINEUP:  Head coach Kristi Knight sends out an experienced lineup for the first tournament consisting of two seniors and three juniors. Helene Robert, Katy Heffel, Michelle Regan, Kali Quick, and Hailey Mireles look to get the fall portion of the schedule off to a fast start at the Badger Invitational. The lineup has made a combied 115 tournament appearances for the Wildcats.  Freshman Morgan Moon will also see her first collegiate action and will compete in the tournament as an individual.

ROBERT AND HEFFEL LEAD TEAM INTO NEW SEASON:  After going through last season without a senior on the roster, the Wildcats will be lead in 2006-07 by seniors Helene Robert and Katy Heffel.  Robert and Heffel led the team in seven of the 11 tournaments last season. Several other returning players give the Wildcats hope for the upcoming campaign. Both Kali Quick and Michelle Regan led the team in two tournaments each last season.
