Wildcats Open 2014-15 Campaign in Lawrence

MANHATTAN, Kan. -The Kansas State women's golf team won't have to travel very far to open its 2014-15 season as the Wildcats will compete in the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 8-9, at the par-72, 6,158-yard Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kansas.

The tournament will consist of 36 holes on Monday followed by 18 holes on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (CT) both days. The Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational is a tournament that is rotated between Lawrence and Manhattan and the event is free and open to the public.

Six members of the K-State squad will be competing in the opening event of the season with Olivia Eliasson, Carly Ragains, Connie Jaffrey, Chandler Gallagher and Madison Talley making up the scoring lineup. Katherine Gravel-Coursol will participate as an individual.

"We are really confident going in. The girls have had a great summer and have been really successful," K-State assistant coach Stewart Burke said. "We have added two really good recruits, Connie Jaffrey from Scotland and Chandler Gallagher from Missouri, and they are going to be a part of the lineup for the first time. It is going to be a great experience for them."

In 2013, the Wildcats placed second in the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational and were led by Eliasson, who tied for third. Two years ago in Lawrence, K-State finished third and placed three individuals in the top 10.

Kansas State will be joined in the 2014 version of the event by 10 other teams, which includes Arkansas State, Central Arkansas, FGCU, Kansas, Oral Roberts, Redlands CC, Texas Tech, UALR and UMKC.

The Wildcats will be without head coach Kristi Knight for the season opener due to the passing of her mother earlier this week. Funeral services will be held Tuesday in College Station, Texas.

"We have something bigger to play for than just ourselves this week," Burke said."We are rooting for her.We wish she was here and we are really excited to do well for her. We are all thinking about her and we hope our results will make her proud."

Results of the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational will be posted on www.kstatesports.com at the conclusion of play on Monday and Tuesday.
