Wildcats Bring Home Silver at Chip-N-Club

EAGLE, Neb. The Kansas State women’s golf team used a trio of individual top-10 performances to finish the Chip-N-Club Invitational Tuesday in second place. K-State shot a 19-over par 303, leaving them just five strokes behind tournament winner Texas State in the 19-team field. The Wildcats’ finish at the par 71, 6,079-yard Woodland Hills Golf Club is their best since bringing home second in the Chip-N-Club Invitational in fall 2005.

“We’re disappointed of course that we didn’t win, but I think it was a great experience for the team,” head coach Kristi Knight said. “To be in the hunt in the first tournament of the year and go through that experience, I think they can go from here and use this down the road to help them. We did some good things here, but it just wasn’t quite our day on the greens.”

Linn Gustafsson of Texas State was the individual tournament champion. Gustafsson shot a 1-under par 212 to help her squad win the team championship with a three-round score of 45-over par 897.

Senior Kali Quick, sophomore Abbi Sunner and senior Michelle Regan all placed in the top 10 for K-State.

Quick entered her round in third place and used a final-round score of 76 to jump into a three-way tie for second. Her three-round total of 220 is a career best, edging out her 2004 Edwin Watts/Palmetto finish of 223. Also, Quick’s tie for second place is her top collegiate performance. Her previous best was a tie for fifth at the 2004 Marilynn Smith/Sunflower.

Sunner was tied for eighth heading into Tuesday, but a 3-over par round of 74 bumped her up to a tie for sixth. Sunner’s tournament score of 223 ties for her career best along with her 2007 Susie Maxwell Classic total.

Regan tied for 10th place after Tuesday’s round of a 5-over par 76. It was Regan’s 12th-career top-20 finish and has now finished in the top 10 in three of her last four tournaments, dating back to last spring’s Mountain View Collegiate.
