Wildcats tee off 2008-09 season

MANHATTAN, Kan. -   The Kansas State women’s golf team opens up its season at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb., for the Chip-N-Club Invitational. The event will tee off with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. on Monday for the first 36 holes. The third and final round will begin with a 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday. Teams will be scored by their top four individual finishes each round.

 

THE FIELD:  K-State is joined by two other Big 12 schools in Nebraska and Kansas. The entire 13-team field includes Arkansas-Little Rock, Creighton, Drake, East Carolina, Illinois, Kansas State, Kansas, Nebraska (A & B teams), South Dakota State, Texas State, UMKC and UC Riverside.

 

SEASON PREVIEW:  The Wildcats return four players from last year’s team, who will take on a mentoring role this year as four freshmen join the squad. Junior Abbi Sunner will look to continue her success from last season’s fifth place finish at the Bronco Fall Invitational. Junior Morgan Moon competed in five tournaments a year ago and owned a 80.79 stroke average. Emily and Elise Houtz, now sophomores, look to build on their freshman campaigns.

 

2007 CHIP-N-CLUB:  For the fourth time in as many years, the K-State women’s golf team will return to the Chip-N-Club Invitational. Last season, Kristi Knight coached K-State to a second-place team finish in the Chip-N-Club. Then-senior Kali Quick took second-place honors individually, shooting a 220 (+7). Quick, Abbi Sunner and Michelle Regan all finished in the top 10  in last year’s tournament.

 

THE HOST Wilderness Ridge Golf Course:  The University of Nebraska women’s golf program will host 11 other schools (three in the Big 12 Conference) in the Chip-N-Club Invitational. The Wilderness Ridge Golf Course is a par 72 that spans 6,068 yards.

 

LAST TIME OUT:  K-State’s last tournament appearance came in 2008 at the Big 12 Championship in Stillwater, Okla. The Wildcats finshed eight as a team shooting a 335-324-330989 (+125). Michelle Regan finished in a tie for 15th place in the tournament, and freshman then Elise Houtz just missed a top-20 finish individually.
