K-State Finishes Eighth in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. Two Wildcats just missed the top 20 as K-State finished eighth out of 13 at the Chip-N-Club Invitational, with a team score of 918.

 

Following 22-over-par 310 to place 10th during the first round of the season, the Kansas State women’s golf team shaved five strokes off its total in round two to move up to ninth place. K-State would climb yet another spot on Tuesday to finish eighth.

 

“I like all their attitudes, and the ability is there,” head coach Kristi Knight said. “We showed the ability to make birdies, and that is a great thing. We just need to clean up some of the bogeys. When we do that we will be in business.”

 

K-State boasted a traveling a roster that included three players who competed in their first collegiate tournament at the par-72, 6,068-yard Wilderness Ridge Golf Course.

 

Host Nebraska would overtake Arkansas-Little Rock’s lead on day two by shooting a 291 (+3) in the third round, and finish in first place. UALR would finish in second place just four strokes behind the Huskers at 888 strokes (+24).

 

Arkansas-Little Rock’s Sarah Wikstrom was champion of the Chip-N-Club, carding a 2-under-par performance. First day leader Mary Kate Bird, would finish second with a 1-over 215.

 

Junior Abbi Sunner and freshman Paige Osterloo finished in a tie for 22nd place, as each carded a 13-over-par for the tournament. Osterloo would shoot the lowest round of the tournament for K-State with a two-over par in the third round. Sophomore Elise Houtz finished just one stroke back of Sunner and Osterloo, shooting a 14-over to finish 27th.

 

Freshman Laura Hildebrandt placed fourth on the team, and in a tie for 37th place, with a score of 233. Ami Storey would finish just two strokes behind Hildebrandt in a tie for 47th. Sophomore Emily Houtz competed as an individual in the tournament, and finished 22-over-par for a tie for 51st.

 

K-State’s next action comes on Sept. 22-23 at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational in Lawrence, Kan. Stats from the Chip-N-Club Invitational are available at www.golfstat.com.
