Wildcats in Eighth After Day One in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Kan. After carding a 30-over 318 during the first round to sit in a five-way tie for fifth place, the Kansas State women’s golf team fell to eighth after the second round as the Wildcats finished day one of the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational on Monday at the par 72, 6,242-yard Alvamar Golf Course.

 

The Wildcats added three strokes to its total during round two, carding a 33-over 321, while Kansas and South Florida, two other teams in the five-way tie after the first round, improved during the second 18 holes. The Wildcats, who totaled a 36-hole score of 63-over 639, sit just 10 strokes out of the top five heading into Tuesday’s final round.

 

Illinois State led after the first stanza, carding a 14-over par 302, with Oral Roberts and Nebraska tied for second at 19-over par 307. However, the Cardinals turned in a 27-over 315 during round two and relinquished their lead to Oral Roberts, as the Golden Eagles lead heading into Tuesday’s final round at 39-over 615. Illinois State is second after a 36-hole score of 41-over 617, while Nebraska sits in third place at 43-over 619.

 

Kansas’ Jennifer Clark, playing as an individual, topped the field following round two as she holds a one-stroke lead over Oral Roberts’ Eve Santillan at 5-over 149. Kate White of Nebraska is third at 7-over 151, while Emily Powers of Kansas and Britt Knutson of Illinois State are tied for fourth at 8-over 152.

 

Kansas State freshman Paige Osterloo was tied for 40th after a first-round score of 81, but turned around to card a 75 during round two. The Rapid City, S.D., native leads the Wildcats as she is tied for 12th overall at 12-over 156, and eyes her first collegiate top-20 finish after tying for 22nd last week at the Chip-N-Club Invitational.

 

Abbi Sunner is K-State’s second lowest scorer after carding identical rounds of 7-over 79s for a 36-hole score of 14-over 158. A product of Ankeny, Iowa, Sunner will begin Tuesday’s final round tied for 23rd.

 

Laura Hildebrandt, like her freshman teammate, improved off her round-one score of 81 as she turned in a 79 during round two. The Ancaster, Ontario, product will begin the final 18 holes tied for 35th.

 

Elise Houtz and Ami Storey round out the K-State team competitors as Houtz is tied for 61st at 22-over 166, while Storey is tied for 75th at 15-over 159.

 

Morgan Moon, who is competing as an individual, currently sits in the top 20 as she it tied for 15th at 13-over 157. Emily Houtz, also an individual competitor, is tied for 40th at 17-over 161.

 

The final round of the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational is set for an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday. Complete results for the invitational will be posted on www.k-statesports.com as soon as they are made available.
