Wildcats tie for seventh at Marilynn Smith

LAWRENCE, Kan. The Kansas State women’s golf team moved up one spot from day one to finish in a tie for seventh at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational. The Wildcats finished the tournament shooting a 318-321-316955 (+91) at the par 72, 6,242-yard Alvamar Golf Course.

K-State shaved five strokes from its second round score in round three and carded its best round of the tournament at 316, but it is a performance head coach Kristi Knight knows is not good enough.

“We played very young at this tournament,” said Knight. “We not only made some physical mistakes, but we weren’t as strong mentally as we are going to need to be.”

Nebraska closed in on a four-shot deficit from day one to tie Oral Roberts and force a playoff. Both teams finished with a 926, but Oral Roberts held off Nebraska in the second hole of the playoff to claim the title. Illinois State, in second place after day one, cut two strokes from its second round score, but still dropped a spot to finish third with a score of 302-315-313930 (+66).

Kansas took the top two finishes with Emily Powers finishing first overall, carding a 7-over 223. Jennifer Clark, who competed as an individual, finished second with a 9-over 225. Eve Santillan of Oral Roberts finished third, shooting a 77-73-76226 (+10).

Two K-State freshmen, Paige Osterloo and Laura Hildebrandt, led the Wildcats by carding a 236 (+20) to finish in a tie for 20th place. Hildebrandt shot a 4-over during the final round to jump from 35th to a tie for 20th. The pair of top-20 finishes were the first of the year for K-State.

Abbi Sunner was K-State’s third lowest scorer in the tournament, finishing just two strokes behind Osterloo and Hildebrandt with a score of 238 (+22).

Elise Houtz and Ami Storey rounded out the K-State team competitors as Houtz finished in a tie for 51st at 30-over 246, while Storey tied for 80th at 40-over 256.

Morgan Moon, who competed as an individual, finished tied for 41st with a score of 243 (+27). Emily Houtz, also an individual competitor, finished tied for 66th, shooting a 250 (+34).

K-State’s next action will be in two weeks when it travels to Lubbock, Texas, to compete in the Jeannie McHaney/Audrey Morehead Invitational.
