Wildcats in Fourth After Day One

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Hosting a home tournament for the first time in two years, the Kansas State women’s Purple Team sits in fourth place after the first 36 holes Monday of the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational at the par 72, 6,287-yard Colbert Hills Golf Course.

Tulsa fought strong winds that held throughout the day to lead the competition with a two-round total of 611 (+35) besting Arkansas, which shot a 613 (+37). Arkansas’ Kelli Shean leads all individuals after shooting a 74 in the first round, followed by a six-birdie round of 68 to put her at 2-under par for the tournament.

In round one, the Wildcats found themselves in second-place through 12 holes, but the Cats couldn’t overcome the long par 5s and fell 24 shots over the next four holes to finish the first round at 329. The shot of the day came at the par-4 12th where senior Morgan Moon dropped in an eagle from 150 yards out on her second shot.

K-State improved by 16 strokes in round two to 313, giving the Wildcats a two-round score of 66-over par 642.

“We were able to bounce back a little in round two,” said head coach Kristi Knight. “We did not handle the conditions well this morning. If you hit a bad shot in a wind that strong, it kind of compounds your problem. We had some good golf out there today, but just not a complete round as a whole. Tulsa and Arkansas are good teams and they played better golf than everyone else, but tomorrow is another opportunity.”

Making her collegiate debut, Hanna Roos shot a 6-over par 78 in the first round, followed by another 78 in round two. She started round two with two straight bogeys, then scored pars on 10 of the next 14 holes. The native of Sweden finished the day 12-over par after two rounds to tie for seventh place.

“I am very proud of Hanna,” said Knight. “She did an excellent job for it being her first college competition, given the conditions. She is a very smart player and she has a lot of good golf ahead of her.”

Moon shot a 10-over par 82 in the first round, then rebounded with 5-over par 77 in the second round to put her in a tie for 17th. She bogeyed three holes on the back nine of round two, but parred the other six, matching that with a 38 on the front to give a her team low of 77 for the day.

Abbi Sunner and Whitney Pyle are tied for 31st after shooting two-round scores of 164. Sunner struggled in the first round and shot 85 (+13) along with Pyle. In the afternoon round, both players bounced back by shooting 7-over par 79.

K-State’s White Team is in seventh place after shooting a first-round score of 337 (+49). It improved by 18 strokes in the second round to a 319 (+31), for a two-round score of 656.

Ami Storey led the White Team after carding a 157 (+13), including a 77 (+5) in the second round. Storey shaved three strokes off her first-round total of 80 to move her into 12th place, edging out teammate Paige Osterloo. Osterloo was in the top 15 throughout the day, shooting a 78 (+6) in the first round followed by an 8-over par 80 in the second round to put her in a tie for 13th.

Manhattan native Elise Houtz struggled early in the day, but rebounded as the day progressed. She carded a 13-over par 85 in the morning round, then shot 77 in round two to tie for 26th place.

The final round of the 54-hole tournament begins at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday with a shotgun start. Live scores can be followed at golfstat.com.
