Lady Golfers Hit the Links at Old Hawthorne

MANHATTAN, Kan - The Kansas State women’s golf team will travel to Missouri to play in the third annual Johnie Imes Invitational, Oct. 5th and 6th, at The Club at Old Hawthorne. The competition is a 54-hole format with 36 holes played on Monday starting with a 8 a.m. shotgun start. The final round will begin Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

THE FIELD:  K-State is joined by familiar Big 12 competitors, Kansas and Missouri. The Wildcats are also joined by Tulsa, who won the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational last week at Colbert Hills. K-State has a record of 3-5 against the field so far this year. The entire 18-team field consists of: Arkansas-Little Rock, Bradley, Florida International, Illinois State, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Middle Tennessee State, Missouri State, Ole Miss, Princeton, Redland CC, Southern Illinois, Tulsa, UMKC and Wisconsin.

JOHNIE IMES PREVIEW:  Competition has been the story for the Wildcats thus far during the early fall season. In two tournaments, the Wildcats have not had the same five in their lineup and traveling to Missouri will be no different.

“We can only field five people in these tournaments so it is a tough competition to get into the lineup week in and week out,” said head coach Kristi Knight.

Tough competition in practice and qualifying rounds have contributed to a good start for the Wildcats, which are 23 strokes better than they were at this time a year ago playing in the same events.

“We are excited to be going to this event. It has a little bit of a stronger field than the previous two events we have competed in,” said Knight.

Returning to the lineup this week will be Hanna Roos. Roos, who made her collegiate debut, led the Wildcats last week in the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational with a 54-hole score of 231 (+15) and a tie for seventh place. Joining Roos will be sophomore Paige Osterloo who also had a strong showing last week placing 13th out of 70 competitors, carding a 75 (+3) in the final round.

Elise Houtz, who leads the the Wildcats with a stroke average of 76.66, will also be competing.

This will mark the first time the Wildcats have competed in this tournament and the last time they will compete in the tri-state area this season.

THE CLUB AT OLD HAWTHORNE GOLF COURSE:  Missouri University will host the invite at The Club at Old Hawthorne, 6,204-yard par-72 which sits just east of Columbia. This will not be the last time the Wildcats step foot on this course, as Old Hawthorne is set to host the 2011 Women’s Golf Big 12 Championship. The course opened in 2007 and now hosts the Missouri Open

LAST TIME OUT: Hanna Roos shot a final round score of 75 to propel the Wildcats to a third-place finish in the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, its only home competition of the year. Going into the final round K-State trailed third place Illinois State by four strokes. Roos and Abbi Sunner were able to birdie the par-5, 16th to bring the Wildcats to within one stroke of the Cardinals. Roos birdied again, along with fellow freshman Whitney Pyle on the par-4 4th, to overcome Illinois State by one stroke. The third-place finish is the best finish in the same tournament since 2005, where they finished third as well.
