Wildcats Move Up in Second Round
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Freshman Hanna Roos shot an even par 72 and the Kansas State women’s golf team improved by 10 shots to move into seventh place in the second round of the Price’s Give’em Five Intercollegiate at NMSU Golf Course Tuesday.
K-State carded a 295 (+7) in the second round, its lowest 18-hole score of the year. The Wildcats have totaled a two-round score of 600 (+24) to sit in seventh, moving up one spot from round one. The Wildcats are just three shots behind fifth place Baylor, which shot a 294 in the second round.
“The ladies did a nice job today,” said head coach Kristi Knight. “A 10-stroke improvement is significant. They all feel like they still left some shots on the greens today. The putting has been inconsistent with a few three-putts today. They know they are hitting a lot of quality shots and they want to convert more birdies. I am proud of them. This is a difficult driving course and they have been solid off the tee and showed discipline when needed.”
Idaho took over the top spot from UC-Irvine after shooting a 287 (-1), giving the Vandals a two-round score of 583 (+7). Defending champion UC-Irvine shot 290 in the second round giving it a two-round score of 584 (+8). Big 12 rival Kansas sits in eighth place at 603 (+27).
After being tied for first at the conclusion of round one, Christine Wong of San Diego State took over the top spot among the individuals with a 4-under par in the second round, putting her at 7-under par. Wong edged out Baylor’s Hannah Burke, who shot 73 (+1).
K-State's Roos shot a season-high 84 in the first round Monday, but got back on track Tuesday with an even-par 72, the lowest 18-hole score of her young career. Her combined score of 155 after two rounds is also a career-best. Roos moved up 31 places from round one and sits in a tie for 53rd place.
Ami Storey is tied for 21st after carding a career-low 2-over par 74 in the second round. Storey’s two-round total of 149 is also a career-best.
Senior Abbi Sunner shot a season-low 73 (+1) in the second round, improving four strokes from an opening-round 77. The Iowa native moved up 12 spots from round one and sits in a tie for 27th.
Morgan Moon and Emily Houtz each shot 76 (+4). Moon dropped one shot from the first round, putting her in a tie for 29th. Houtz improved by two shots from the first round, giving her a 36-hole score of 154, a career-low. Houtz sits in a tie for 45th, moving up eight spots from the first round.
The third and final round of the Price’s Give’em Five will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. (CT) Wednesday. Results will be posted on www.k-statesports.com as soon as they become available.
