Wildcats Finish Third in Fall Finale

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. The Kansas State women’s golf team didn’t post the final-round score they would have liked in the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate, but they still managed a third-place finish on the par 72, 5,933-yard Oak Point Golf Course. The Wildcats finished the tourney at 61-over par 925, 19 strokes off the lead. The top-5 placing was their fourth in five tournaments during the fall schedule.

“Michelle (Regan) played real solid, but other than that, it was a real struggle,” Wildcat head coach Kristi Knight said. “The girls did the best they could do. But in the big picture, third in this field is a good result for us. It’s the best result we’ve had at this event in probably six years or so. Right now it doesn’t taste very good because it wasn’t a good day today.”

East Carolina won the team title with a 42-over par 906, edging Nebraska by three strokes. The Cornhuskers’ J.C. Stevenson was the individual winner after shooting an even-par 216. The tournament featured four teams ranked in Golfstat’s top 50, three of which K-State beat.

Regan was looking for back-to-back tournament wins, but her final round of even par left her one stroke back and in second place. Regan shot a 1-over par 217 for the tournament, her third top-10 finish of the fall.

Kali Quick posted an 18-over par 234, putting her in a tie for 32nd. Abbi Sunner was two strokes back after firing a 20-over par 236, good for a tie for 38th.

Hailey Mireles shot a 22-over par 238 for her three rounds. Mirelels finished in a tie for 47th. Freshman Elise Houtz, in her third tournament as a Wildcat, shot a 28-over par 244, landing her in a tie for 65th.

With the fall slate done, K-State will pick up its 2007-2008 season Feb. 18-19 when the team heads to Parrish, Fla., for the Central Region Invitational.
