K-State Sweeps Tulsa in Season-Opener

TULSA, Okla. - K-State Women's Rowing put in a stellar season-opening performance against Tulsa, sweeping the Golden Hurricane on the Verdigris River. Racing five boats on the day, the Wildcats earned victories in the 1st Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 8, 3rd Varsity 8, 4th Varsity 8 and 1st Varsity 4 races.

Head coach Patrick Sweeney said Saturday's action, which capped off K-State's week-long Spring Camp, wrapped up what has been an overall, impressive team effort.

"The camp went really well and the athletes have done a really good job of making every outing count in making improvements," Sweeney said. "They've done a really good week of work here - concentrated, focused efforts that paid off this weekend."

Opening up the morning's action were the 4V8 and 3V8 squads. Compromised of this season's novice rowers combined with a few of the team's more experienced personnel, both crews started strong earning victories in their respective races by considerable margins. The 4V8 clocked 7:26.3 to earn a commanding 30-second victory over the Tulsa 4V8 (7:56.2), while the 3V8 nearly matched in effort defeating Tulsa's crew 7:21.12-to-7:49.49.

"They did a really good job in stepping up and really performed well," Sweeney said. "Both boats won convincingly which was nice. They just did a good, solid job and hopefully they'll continue learning and get faster."

Capping off the sweep were the 1V4, 2V8 and 1V8 - all crews that had an impressive Spring Camp leading up to Saturday's head-to-head action. First, the 1V4 (7:44.19) snagged a victory over three Golden Hurricane 4s, including narrowly defeating Tulsa's 1V4 7:44.19-to-7:46.85.

The 2V8, meanwhile, cruised to a near-seven second victory to boost the Wildcats' win total on the morning to four. Tasked with completing the sweep, the 1V8 pulled through clocking 6:46.55 to outlast Tulsa's top boat, which finished the race in 6:49.18.

Sweeney said the new boating for the 1V4 performed well for their first race of the season.

"The [1V4] with it being a new combination, it was nice that they won to give them some confidence moving forward," Sweeney said. "They'll keep improving, they've got a lot of work to do. They got a lot of power in there, but the technique has to be perfected a little bit more and that's going to take a little more time. But it was nice to see a solid base to start from."

Added Sweeney on the top-two varsity boats, "Both of them raced really. I still think there's more speed actually in both boats. As we continue racing season, I think we've got to improve on a couple bits and pieces for next weekend in San Diego. I know that we can get more speed from the type of work we do and I would expect to get more speed after San Diego and then we get a couple more weeks in there where we can focus on certain things and get a few more seconds out of them."

With Spring Camp and the first meet of the season out of the way, the Wildcats quickly shift their attention to the annual San Diego Crew Classic. Set to run from March 28-29, K-State excelled on Mission Bay last season with the 1V8, 2V8 and 1V4 all registering top-10 finishes against some of the top competition in the country.
