SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Wildcat rowing team again showed increased boat speed this weekend at the San Diego Crew Classic. Although this weekend’s regatta did not produce any wins for the K-State crews, coming up against the toughest field of opponents yet this season, the results did show the rowing team is continuing to get faster on the water.
K-State’s Novice 8 crew took fourth in its first race on Saturday to advance into the Petite Final bracket of the event. The Wildcats then finished fourth in that final, placing ahead of boats from Texas, Stanford and Sacramento State. Texas won the Women’s Collegiate Novice Petite with two boats in the field.
The Wildcats put their 1st Varsity 8 boat in the Women’s Collegiate Varsity SeaWorld Cal Cup again looking to make the Grand Final after taking third last year. K-State could not repeat that performance finishing fourth in its opening heat on Saturday. Sunday morning, the crew finished fifth in the Women’s Collegiate Varsity Petite Final trailing Grand Valley, Saint Mary’s, Gonzaga and Sacramento State.
“The conditions for the 1V’s final were not great,” said K-State Head Coach Patrick Sweeney. “They had trouble at the start as the race with our boat’s bows caught in a wind gust. At any rate, the crew caught up with the field by the 500-meter mark and held with them until the last quarter. I feel the 1V could have had a decent result if they had not been given that handicap at the start. Not ideal, but definitely motivation to race even harder in the upcoming competitions.”
In the competition for the Women’s Collegiate 2nd Varsity Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy, K-State finished fifth in its opening heat Saturday. The Wildcats then went on to finish fourth in the Women’s Collegiate 2V 3rd later in the afternoon.
Sweeney said he saw some positive improvement from his crews and believes the team gained valuable experience to take into Saturday’s Kansas Cup.
“All our boats showed increased speed. It’s hard to see that in the placings since we’re up against stronger competition, but the 1V did close the gap on previous competition and the 2V beat Tulsa and San Diego, who beat them just a few weeks ago. The Novices again learned from every race.”
The Wildcats will take on in-state rival Kansas on Saturday as the Jayhawks will host the annual Kansas Cup on Wyandotte County Lake. K-State and KU will tangle in a series of races with points awarded to the winners of each race with varying value. Last year, K-State reclaimed the Kansas Cup after losing in 2010 for the first time in five years. The Wildcats earned the cup with a 13-6 victory over the Jayhawks winning the two races worth the most points.
Fans are welcome to watch the competition at Wyandotte County Lake on Saturday. To get to the viewing area from Interstate 70, take I-435N to the North 93rd Street exit (Exit 18). Continue south on 93rd to the beach shelter at the lake. Racing is set to start at 10:30 a.m.
