Wildcats Compete at Big 12 Championship

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Kansas State rowing team defeated rival Kansas in the 1st Varsity 8 race at the Big 12 Championship on Saturday to take third in the race, but the Wildcats came up short in the team standings finishing fourth overall.

Coach Patrick Sweeney said he was frustrated with the results and believes his Wildcats can post faster times. He credited a lack of time on the water this season in practice as a catalyst to the disappointments at this season's Big 12 Championship.

The Varsity 4 boat rowed its best race to date earning praise from the coaching staff but could not keep pace with the rest of the field. The 1st Varsity 8 put Kansas away comfortably but showed a lack of experience as the Wildcats were unable to catch the leaders while Texas and Oklahoma dueled for first and second. The 2nd Varsity 8 also rowed strong with a good final 500 meters in the race to narrow the gap with the competition. The final push from the 2V8 was not enough, however, as K-State had given up too much ground over the body of the race.

K-State scored 86 points at the regatta held on the Oklahoma River while Texas defended its championship with 108 points to hold off Oklahoma with 97 and Kansas with 92.

The Wildcats will return to the water in two weeks when they participate in the NCAA Central Regional and Conference USA Championship in Tennessee. The four Big 12 schools that participate in rowing and two from the Southeastern Conference will be merging with three from C-USA to form a nine-team conference in rowing. Beginning in 2013 winners of the C-USA Rowing Championship will then earn an automatic qualification to NCAA Women's Rowing Championship.
