K-State First Novice Eight Wins Two More

AUSTIN, Texas On the second day at the Longhorn Invitational the K-State First Novice Eight continued to dominate as they defeated University of Central Florida and Miami.

In the morning race the Wildcats edged out Central Florida by seven tenths of a second and then cruised past Miami, finishing more than one minute ahead of the Hurricanes crew in the afternoon.  “It was great to see our Novices perform well in a tough race,” said head coach Patrick Sweeney.  “We were bow to bow with UCF all the way down the course.  It was good to have a tough race and come out in front, that is the kind of gut-check a young crew needs.”

K-State Varsity Eight squads struggled and finished second against both UCF and Miami.  The 1V8+ finished 16 seconds behind Central Florida and the Hurricanes while the 2V8+ finished with a time of 7:13.3 against UCF and 8:04.3 against Miami.  “The Varsity boats are having a rough weekend.  It is hard for us to compete with crew that have been on the water all year.  We have only had about 10 days of water practice, so our technique is still a bit rough.  It is very difficult to match up without the water time.  We are really looking forward to our spring break training camp, which starts tomorrow, so we can get to work on our technique and boat run.  The athletes have done a good job of coming out with good fight and heart this weekend; they are hanging tough, and I am proud of that,” said Sweeney

Kansas State Second Novice Eight also raced against Texas.  The Wildcats finished second behind the Longhorns.

K-State will conclude racing against Iowa on Sunday.  The Wildcats are scheduled to compete in four races starting at 9:30 a.m.
