Wildcats Finish Fifth at San Diego Crew Classic

MANHATTAN, Kan. In the Grand Final at San Diego Crew Classic, Kansas State’s First Varsity Eight and First Novice Eight both finished fifth in their respective races.  The Second Varsity Eight placed 10th in the Women’s JV Petite Final.

The 1V8+ posted a time of 7:28.76 and finished fifth in the Women’s Cal Cup Grand Final.  The top five boats, led by UC Davis (7:20.49), all finished with in eight seconds of eachother.  St. Joseph’s finished second while SUNY Buffalo and St. Mary’s placed third and fourth respetively.  Temple finished sixth. “The 1V8 showed good base speed, holding second place untill the 1500 meter mark,” said head coach Patrick Sweeney.  “This is especially notewothy since we were in the unfavored outside lane.  We still have yet to develop our sprint and ability to close out a race with more speed, due to our lack of water time - unfortunately this showed.  They should gain a lot of confidence from this race.”

Kansas State’s 1N8+ finished fifth in the Women’s Collegiate Novice Grand Final.  UCLA placed first, separating themselves from the field by 10 seconds.  The next four crews all crossed the tape within five seconds, to make for an exciting finish.  Oregon State captured second, while Stanford and Cal followed with third and fourth respetively.  Washington State rounded out the race with a sixth place finish.  “The Novices did a better job keeping their technique together today, versus yesterday,” Sweeney said.  “This is good to see at such a high pressure, big competition event.  We look for them to continue to learn and improve as the season goes on.”

The Second Varsity Eight placed 10th (7:30.63) behind Miami and SDSU in the Women’s JV Petite Final.

K-State will be back in action next Satruday, April 7 as the Wildcats take on in-state rival Kansas in the Kansas Cup in Lawrence, Kan.
