K-State Wins Two Races at Kansas Cup

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State women’s rowing team won two out of the five races against in-state rival Kansas in the ninth annual Kansas Cup in Lawrence.

After finishing second in the Novice Four race, the Wildcats bounced back to win the Novice Eight and Second Varsity Eight races to take the lead over the Jayhawks.  K-State’s 1N8+ cruised to an eight seconds win over KU while the 2V8+ crossed the line 10-seconds ahead of the Jayhawks.

“The 2V8+ did a good job executing the race plan,” said head coach Patrick Sweeney.  “It was good for their confidence.  They raced it well and reaped the benefits of having a fast start.”

The First Novice Four finished second behind the Kansas (A) boat but 15 second ahead of Kansas (B) boat.

The Varsity Four race also belonged to Jayhawks, as Kansas (B) crossed the line in first place.  The Wildcats finished second and Kansas (A) finished third.

In the final race of the day the KU First Varsity Eight edged out K-State by two seconds to win the Kansas Cup, 12-10.  The Wildcats led for most of the race, but were overtaken in the last 15 strokes.

“I am really upset that we got beat in the last five strokes,” said Sweeney.  “We need to find more fight and aggression.  Up until the last 300-meters or so it was a great race for us.  The rivalry with KU is always a fun one and once again it was some close races.  It will be exciting when we race KU again later in the year.”

Kansas State will back in action in two weeks at Southern IRA’s in Oak Ridge, Tenn. On April 21-22.
