K-State 1V8 Earns Co-Big 12 Boat of the Week Honors

April 9, 2014K-State AthleticsMANHATTAN, Kan. - The 1st Varsity 8 was named Co-Big 12 Boat of the Week, along with Texas' 1st Varsity 4, for its strong performances at the Sunflower Showdown and San Diego Crew Classic. The 1V8 crew of coxswain Hillary Schartz and rowers Meggie Murray, Noelle Dykmann, Lisa Angell, Brittany Long, Allison Dorau, Ashley Houser, Erin Roeser and Madi Haney earned their second-straight weekly award and the third-straight overall for K-State this season.

In the Sunflower Showdown, the 1V8 won the winner-take-all race against Kansas' 1V8 to give K-State a 17-6 advantage and its fourth-straight victory against the Jayhawks in the event. It also extended the 1V8's winning streak to four-straight against KU's 1V8 in head-to-head competition, as the Wildcats have not lost the Showdown's 1V8 race since Nov. 11, 2006 - also the last time K-State lost the Showdown itself. The crew ended the day in Kansas City, Kan., a perfect 2-0, with their other victory coming against SMU - a race they won by a margin of nearly 15 seconds.

In the San Diego Crew Classic last weekend, the 1V8 finished second in its qualifying heat to advance to its first Cal Cup Grand Final since 2010-11. They placed in sixth in the final, giving the 1V8 its best finish in the regatta since 2010-11 crew nabbed Cal Cup bronze.

For the Wildcats, they have earned more weekly honors this season than in their previous 17 seasons combined. Not only has the 1V8 now earned Big 12 and Conference USA Boat of the Week honors this season, but the 2nd Varsity 8 was also named the first Big 12 Boat of the Week for the 2014 season. That crew was awarded the accolade on March 26 for its performance at the Longhorn Invitational that included defeating No. 19-ranked Oklahoma.

K-State has this week off from competition and will look to continue its impressive 2014 campaign with a strong showing at the SIRAs in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on April 18-19.
