K-State Rowing Claims Kansas Cup

MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas State rowing team came away victorious against rival Kansas in the annual Kansas Cup on Saturday on Wyandotte County Lake. The Wildcats won three of five races against the Jayhawks and outscored their opponent 12-8 for the win.

 

K-State opened the event winning by more than two seconds in the Second Novice 8+ race with a time of 7:46.0 earning the team one point toward the Kansas Cup trophy.

 

The Wildcats followed that performance with a dominating win in the First Novice 8+. K-State pulled ahead early and didn’t look back, winning by nearly 31 seconds finishing in 7:02.3. The win earned K-State three points for toward the Kansas Cup.

 

Kansas came back with two wins in the next races claiming the Varsity 4+ with a time of 7:38.7 while K-State finished in 8:08.8. The Jayhawks also won the Second Varsity 8+ for five points in 6:58.2. K-State followed in 7:07.5.

 

Trailing 8-4 heading into the final race, the Wildcats needed to defeat the Jayhawks in the First Varsity 8+ for eight points to claim the Kansas Cup. K-State pulled away from its rival and finished nine seconds ahead of the Jayhawks for the win in 6:37.4.

 

This marks the sixth time the Wildcats have claimed the Kansas Cup over their rivals, bringing the all-time to a tie.

 

Head Coach Patrick Sweeney was please with his team’s performance from the Varsity and Novice boats complimenting the total team effort. He also praised the First Varsity’s improvements.

 

“It is always good to see the team working together from the seven seniors right through to the novices,” He said. “I am enjoying watching the 1V go from strength to strength.”

 

K-State will return to the water next weekend at the Southern IRAs in Oak Ridge, Tenn., to close out the regular season schedule. The Big 12 Championship will be contested in Wyandotte in two weeks.
