MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State women’s rowing team will head to Oak Ridge, Tenn. to compete at the Southern IRA’s on April 21-22.

The Wildcats have five entries in this weekend’s race including Novice 4+, Varsity 4+, Novice 8+, Second Varsity 8+ and First Varsity 8+. K-State will take on teams from Alabama, Barry, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Clemson, Davidson, Georgia, Jacksonville, Louisville, Murray State, Ohio State, Purdue, SMU, Stetson, Tennessee, Texas, Tulsa, Vanderbilt and West Virginia.

“We are really looking forward to racing on a great course this weekend,” said head coach Patrick Sweeney.

The 2,000-meter course at Melton Hill Lake is known as one of the best rowing venues in the U.S. It has served as the site for numerous major championships including the U.S. Nationals, Women’s Nationals, Master’s Nationals and the Pan American Trials. Melton Hill Lake will host the 2007 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships on May 25-27, giving it yet another stamp of approval as one of the nations best racing venues.

Last season all four K-State boats advanced to the finals in their respective events.  The Novice 8+ dominated and brought home the gold while the Second Varsity 8+ finished second.  The Varsity 4+ also won silver crossing the finish line less than a second behind William & Mary.  The First Varsity Eight finished fourth behind Louisville, Sacramento State and Miami (Fla.), but placed ahead of in-state rival Kansas.
