Wildcats Finish Third at Big 12 Invitational

KANSAS CITY, Kan. Kansas State’s First Novice Eight and Second Varsity Eight finished second in their respective races.  In the team standings the Wildcats finished third behind Texas and Kansas at the Big 12 Rowing Invitational held Sunday afternoon at Wyandotte County Lake in Kansas City, Kan.

Turning in a great finish was the 1N8+ boat with a time of 7:35.9.  K-State crossed the line just six seconds behind Texas and 20 seconds ahead of in-state rival Kansas.  The 1N8+ fought hard the entire length of the course and closed to within three seats of Texas with about 400 meters to go, but the Longhorns responded and were able to hold of the charging Wildcats.

The 2V8+ fell behind early but recovered to take a 15-second lead over the Jayhawks and finished second to Texas by only three seconds.

“The 2V8+ put together a great race today,” said head coach Patrick Sweeney.  “They did a good job coming out aggressive and just never giving up.  The 1N8+ also had a good race today.  They really pushed themselves hard through the entire race.  It was good to have a tough test to keep up hungry for more.  Today was a little disappointing for the 1V8+ as they were not able to execute the way they are capable of racing.

K-State wraps up its spring season at the NCAA Central Region Championships on May 12-13 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
