K-State Eyes Conference Title

MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas State rowing team eyes a conference title this weekend at the Big 12 Championship on Wyandotte County Lake. The Wildcats will take on the other three teams in the conference in five races for the Big 12 crown.

K-State heads into the conference championship regatta following solid performances at the Southern IRAs two weeks ago. The varsity squads have rowed strong throughout the season for the Wildcats while the novice crews have continued to progress over the course of the season.

K-State, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas will take to the water at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the opening race pitting the Second Novice 8+ crews against each other. Racing will continue until the final race of the day at 11:30 a.m. when the First Varsity 8+ crews battle. Points will be awarded for placement in each race with a strong emphasis on the two varsity races. With Oklahoma participating in its first year in rowing, the Sooners will not be fielding varsity crews and will not be involved in the team scoring.

This is the first year the Big 12 has attached its name to this event as an official conference championship. In previous years K-State, Kansas and Texas competed in the Big 12 Invitational. The addition of Oklahoma to the ranks of schools competing in rowing as a varsity sport brings the conference total to four schools, and the conference added its name to the championship.
