MANHATTAN, Kan. – Fresh off of three medal-winning performances at the 2013 SIRA Championships, the Kansas State rowing team is ready to begin its post season action at the Big 12 Championship on Saturday in Kansas City. The Wildcats will be taking on defending champion Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and new Big 12 member West Virginia on Wyandotte County Lake at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

“The weather has not been favorable for practice and is not looking great for raceday, but our crews have been performing above the level our amount of practice would project,” said K-State Head Coach Patrick Sweeney. “We’ll just continue to do our best and make the most of whatever gets thrown at us on raceday.”

K-State made some adjustments to its lineups prior to SIRAs and saw success. This week, Sweeney and his coaching staff will see what their Wildcats can do in a championship event against their conference rivals.

“We know Texas and Oklahoma are fast. West Virginia is a bit of an unknown,” Sweeney said. “The name of the game, as always, will be to see improved margins against the crews we’ve met earlier this season and beat the ones we’ve never raced before.”

The championship will feature six races, four Varsity 8 races and two Varsity 4s. Points will be awarded for each place in all six races with the 1st Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 8 and 1st Varsity 4 holding the most weight in the scoring since those are events held at the NCAA Championship. A team champion will be crowned following the final race of the day, and there will be senior recognition for each team as well as Academic All-Big 12 and announcement of the All-Big 12 Conference Team.

The Wildcats will field boats in four of the six events and look to improve on their third-place finish a year ago. Oklahoma enters the championship regatta ranked No. 20 in the latest CRCA/US Rowing Coaches poll looking to unseat Texas as the reigning champion of each of the previous four Big 12 Rowing Championships.

Admission to the Big 12 Rowing Championship is free at Wyandotte County Lake on Saturday. To get to the viewing area from Interstate 70, take I-435 North to Exit 18 (Wolcott Dr.), turn right and follow 93rd Street to the beach shelter at the lake. Parking is $5. Updates will be available on social media by following Twitter handles @kstate_gameday and @Big12Conference and the official hashtag for the championship is #Big12ROW.
