Rowing Closes Season at Regional Championships

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. Kansas State completed the 2007-08 rowing season on Sunday with ninth-place team finish in the Central Region at the 2008 Aramark Central/South Rowing Region Championships from Oak Ridge, Tenn.

“Our team finish is reflective of the lack of depth on our team at the moment,” head coach Pat Sweeney said. “However, with just three entries, we were able to finish higher in the team standings than Kansas and avenge the result of the Big 12s.”

The Second Varsity 8+, competing in the C Final Sunday morning, came off the line quick with Iowa. During the first 1000 meters, Iowa managed to creep out to a 2-3 seat lead over the Wildcats, as these two crews separated themselves from the rest of the field. K-State made a strong push during the third 500 meters and closed the gap to one seat. The final sprint saw the Cats and Hawkeyes race neck-and-neck to the tape. Iowa finished a mere 1.4 seconds ahead.

“This crew (2V8) has proved that they are tough racers all season long,” Sweeney said. “They have been able to perform when asked.”

In the first race of the day, the First Varsity 8+ struggled yet again to race to their potential after leading the field for the first 700 meters. The Wildcats allowed the other crews to move through them and finished sixth in the C Final.

The Novice 8+ competed in Sunday’s Petite Final and placed sixth. The boat attacked the race with focus and determination and showed good improvement over the weekend, gaining valuable experience.
