MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State rowing team is set to start its fall season this weekend when they take to the water at the Head of the Des Moines in Iowa. Action begins on the water from Prospect Park in Des Moines beginning at 8:30 a.m. with a full slate of races and K-State’s first race is set for 9:50 a.m.

K-State will enter 10 boats at the Head of the Des Moines led by seven seniors. After losing only one member of the 1st Varsity 8 from last season, Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said he is looking forward to competing with a large number of experienced racers this season. He added it will also be interesting to see the younger racers step up from the Novice level to Varsity during the 2011-12 campaign.

“This year should be a fun one, especially for the seniors on the team,” Sweeney said. “They have worked hard over the course of their college careers to arrive at this stage of ability and competitiveness.”

As a whole, Sweeney said the Wildcats are ready to get on the water and compete to test their progress and build off of last season.

“The primary objective of this regatta for us is not so much competition against other crews as it is against ourselves and our expectations at this stage in the team’s training,” Sweeney said. “The Head of the Des Moines is a good course to teach new rowers and especially coxswains what head racing is all about and give them confidence in handling themselves on raceday.”

Following the Head of the Des Moines, the Wildcats will head south to take on some familiar foes from the Big 12 Conference and Conference USA at the Head of the Oklahoma. A number of strong West Coast teams will be at the event as well.
