K-State Rowing Opens at Head of Des Moines

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State rowing team begins its 2009 fall season this weekend at the 26th annual Head of the Des Moines with the Wildcats set to compete in three events. K-State will have a total of 11 boats in action on the Des Moines River with its first race scheduled for 10:55 a.m.

The Wildcats will field four boats in the Women's Collegiate 8+ race as the team boasts a strong amount of experience. K-State will also enter one boat in the Women's Collegiate Novice 8+ event and field six crews in the Women's Collegiate 4+ division.

K-State has seen great success in the past in this event, winning four gold medals last year - one in every race the Wildcats entered. The strong performances last year secured the Team Collegiate Cup honoring the Wildcats as the top college program at the event.

This year the Wildcats will face crews from Kansas, Iowa, Creighton and Drake as well as club teams from Nebraska.

K-State enters the 2009-10 season following one of the most successful campaigns by the team in school history. K-State tallied 13 first-place finishes last season and claimed the Big 12 Conference title in the 1st Varsity 8+ race and finished second in the total team competition at the Big 12 Championship.
