K-State Varsity Eight Places Three Boats in the Top-13

MANHATTAN, Kan. In the 2006 fall season opener, the Kansas State women’s rowing team placed all three boats in the top-13 in the Varsity 8+ head race at the Head of the Oklahoma Regatta held Saturday on the Oklahoma River.

Racing against the teams from across the nation, including Louisville, Kansas and Texas, the Wildcats “A” boat finished seventh with a time of 15:10.752.  The “C” boat placed 10th (15:38.021) while the “B” boat crossed the line 13th (15:55.740).

The top-12 teams in the head race advanced to the 500 meter sprints, which were held under lights for the first time in the United States.  In heat-one, K-State “A” boat finished fourth (1:40.877), while the “C” boat finished third (1:42.417) in heat-two.

“I thought we raced hard.” said head coach Patrick Sweeney.  “We are in good position physically but need to clean it up technically.  Overall we raced hard.”

The Wildcats will continue competition on Sunday in Collegiate Varsity 4+ and Collegiate Novice 8+ races.  K-State will have four boats in Varsity 4+ and one boat in Novice 8+.  Top six finishers from Varsity 4+ race will advance to the 500 meter sprint.
